Today is one of my favorite holidays Independence Day! In my family the two big holidays are the 4th of July and Thanksgiving, both of which are American holidays. I have spent the last little while at my mom and dad's house visiting and helping my mom get ready for our nations birthday. This is a time for me to bake and enjoy using my vintage housewife skills (as a good friend called my love of making everything from scratch). My parents are expecting up to 50 people at their house so I thought I would pull a bit of weight I made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and peanut butter blossoms (both are my husband's favorites), as well as apple, and cherry pies. This year I did mix it up a bit I still made everything from scratch even my crust but for my apple pie I added cheddar cheese to the crust, and for the first time ever I made cherry pie. I even pitted the fresh sour cherries by hand (a process that was surprisingly easy). I can't wait to dig into the treats I have made and see what everyone else has to contribute to the feast. Happy 237th birthday America, I am glad to know you.
Apple pie with cheddar cheese crust cut in the shape of stars. This is definitely something a woman in the 1940s or 1950s would have done.
I am pretty happy with how this one turned out between the lactate work and the braided crust (both of which I learned to do from a vintage cookbook) I think it looks pretty tasty. And I was shocked by the color no food coloring required.
A table full of cooling cookies. What could be more American than peanut butter blossoms, and everyone always likes the twist on a classic with these oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Even Bogart is ready for Independence day, he is just being a bit camera shy
Two absolutely beautifully decorated homes just a couple of blocks up the street from my folks.
And honestly it feels pretty vintage to me to decorate like this. I think it would be petty easy to decorate like this.
Happy 4th of July!!!
